Homework Expectations - Board Homework Policy - B.P. 6154.1 (a)
The Governing Board recognizes that homework contributes toward building responsibility, self-discipline and lifelong learning habits, and that time spent on homework directly influences a student's ability to meet the district's academic standards. The Board expects students, parents/guardians and staff to view homework as a routine and important part of a student's daily life.
Consistent throughout the K-6 levels is a requirement to read, or be read to on a daily basis (Monday through Thursday) or weekly basis. The classroom teacher will inform parents of their homework practices and procedures within the first two weeks of each school year.
Parent involvement, especially with primary level students (K-3), is strongly encouraged. At any level, when a parent is interested and involved, homework can become a common goal, a time to work together and offer the individual instruction not always available at school. Taking an active role lets the child know that the parent/guardian considers the work important.
Parents should think of themselves as role models and facilitators. Children benefit from the support in developing a sense of responsibility about homework.
Homework will be assigned on a nightly basis (Monday through Thursday) or on a weekly basis by each classroom teacher with the exception of kindergarten. The kindergarten teacher will assign homework on a weekly basis only.
The maximum recommended number of minutes to be spent on daily homework is as follows:
Grade Level |
Homework |
Reading |
| Kindergarten |
Up to 25 minutes per week. |
Does not include 15 minutes of reading daily. |
| Grade 1 |
25 minutes daily. |
Includes 15 minutes of reading daily. |
| Grade 2 |
30 minutes daily. |

| Grade 3 |

| Grade 4 |

| Grade 5 |
50 minutes daily. |
Does not include 20 minutes of reading daily. |
| Grade 6 |
60 minutes daily. |
Does not include 20 minutes of reading daily. |
Once a child has reached this maximum recommended number of minutes and the homework is not completed, a parent or guardian may sign off and homework time may cease.
The Board believes that all children need quality time and free time after school. These limits have been established so children will have time to pursue other hobbies/interests and home assigned tasks.
Long term assignments, such as a research project, will be assigned over a longer period of time by the teacher. Unused homework time can be used to complete these long term projects. Deadlines for these projects should give each child sufficient time to complete the assigned task.
